Learning Objectives

Through the development of an interactive web map we were able to put into practice new skills of data sourcing and preparation to ultimately display it using a Leaflet JavaScript web mapping API and library. We were then also able to apply the skills we had learned in previous iterations to style it to match the theme of our webpage where it was being embedded.

About the data

Provided by the Education and Early Childhood Development of the Nova Scotia Government, this dataset provides a directory of Schools offering French programs in Nova Scotia. It contains the addresses of all schools in the province, along with their respective school boards. Additionally, the dataset specifies the grade levels offered and indicates whether schools provide early, middle, or late immersion. It also notes the availability of intensive or integrated French programs. This resource is invaluable for parents considering French education options for their children.

Production Process

The following steps were used to create this webpage featuring an embedded web map using open-source data and an open-source web mapping API.

Create basic HTML web page
Locate data (open source)
Style the web page using CSS suitable for the data being presented
Clean the data

Ensure consistency
Fill any null values
Remove outliers
Export to CSV UTF-8 format

Prepare the data for web mapping

Geocode addresses using QGIS plugin
Repair any errors preventing Geocoding
Produce GeoJSON file

Market Cluster plugin - allows data points to cluster at smaller scales for better viewing
ZoomBox plugin - Users can zoom in and out of the map
BetterScale plugin - Users can see a scale bar as reference on the map

Create script files to connect the GeoJSON data file to the map
